As we approach one of my favorite holidays of the year, I'd like to take the time to show my appreciation for all the mothers in the world.
My mother is one of my greatest cheerleaders and influences. She taught me to give, to love, to see good in others and to persevere to overcome. Funny enough, for years, the mother of all learning to read acronyms I've taught is MOM.
If your child struggles with reading, then one of these 3 things is missing.
The first M stands for Meaning. Is your child getting meaning out of reading?
Reading is a meaningful process. Reading takes place when thought is engaged with the print on the page. It is not an exercise in calling words or in making sounds that correspond to symbols. Regardless of whether the reading is done orally or silently, the essential part of the process is that they are getting meaning from the text and the process itself is meaningful.
You don’t have to be a genius to learn to read – but you do have to understand what you are reading and WHY!
The O in MOM stands for Observation.
We often mistake attention issues for retention issues. If you don't remember how to read a word, you probably didn't learn the letter sounds or how to blend them correctly, to begin with. It's best to check early on if they are able to decode words. To ensure progress in reading and writing, parents and teachers must take time to observe what children are doing when they are reading.
The final M stands for Mechanics.
Mechanical reading skills, such as the ability to analyze the sounds of words, blend them together and then figure out this new combination of symbols to read them correctly and independently are essential to the reading process.
This skill is best mastered when the parent or teacher has a firm grasp of the mechanics involved in the reading process.
